Bayside's development followed a pattern common to a lot of the older Long Island and Queens waterfront communities we serve: farmland and large estates through the 18th and 19th centuries, then a rapid build-out once the railroad arrived. The Bayside train station opened in 1886, and by the early 20th century the neighborhood had become a genuine haven for film-era celebrities, Rudolph Valentino and Gloria Swanson both had homes here, drawn by the waterfront, yacht clubs, and easy access to the Astoria film studios before Hollywood pulled the industry west.

Even the Queens Giant, a tulip tree estimated at 350 to 400 years old hidden in woods between the Horace Harding and Cross Bronx Expressways, has outlasted every wave of construction that's passed through the surrounding blocks, a useful reminder that the infrastructure under those blocks has had just as long to age.
